A famous writer once referred to Lake Como as everything evoking love. Others have called it the “looking glass of Venus.” Approximately 30 miles north of Milan, it is a shimmering deep blue, more than 2 ½ miles across at its widest point. Varenna sits on one shore in the center of the lake. It is famous for its flower-studded gardens and apricot-colored villas built for the very wealthy of the 17th and 18th centuries.
